The Voice Inside Says STOP Rhyming!
I know I know
You who have stayed with me this long
Can see all my rhymes in all my songs
Oops I mean poems
(Or are they? Maybe not!)
Despite what many may deem as whimsy
Rhyming in poetry means everything to me (see?)
I know I know it’s more than sounding similar
Poetry’s more than pacing and paragraphing
And even (gasp!) structure that’s safe and familiar
Familiar is where most best operate
Writing poems that resonate
When you read my lines aloud
The rhymes they practically scream and shout
(At you)
But yet there’s a Voice inside
That keeps nagging me to expand
Prodding to constantly contend
To let my poetry balloon and expand
So it’s not always about rhyming
Or achieving pitch-perfect timing
To break the mould and rise above
Like sourdough
I’m trying Voice, I’m trying
To let the words flow
Like liquid from a stream
(If you know what I mean)
Rats!
Clearly I’m still rhyming
I can’t help it, alright?
Stop hollering at me to stop
Rhyming’s all I’ve got!
Or maybe not?
Let’s see what happens
When I hit
My 500th, 1000th poem
{Stop already!}
[Inspired by an essay that, in turn, was inspired by Jeff Bezos!]
