Will Changes Ever Take A Vacay? Unlikely.

There will soon be major changes, challenges, and upheavals on my homefront.

Time for me to hide under the blanket!

You see, I’m not big on change. I would much rather keep things the way they are.

I believe I’m not alone, although this Forbes article clarifies that people aren’t so much hating change as hating the loss of control. Or having changes happen to them without their consent.

That sounds about right!

Exactly what changes am I expecting to see over the next several months?

Let’s see.

My 89-year-old mom with Alzheimer’s is moving out of our home to live with my 71-year-old sister.
My domestic helper for 15 years will also move out to care for my in-laws who are now in their 80’s.
[In turn, my household chores and duties will of course escalate!]

My 13-year-old son with autism will sit for his first major national exam in September.
His 15-year-old brother will be taking his second major national exam next year.
[Both exams will determine whether they get to the next rung in our nation’s competitive academic ladder, and get into schools of their choice.]

My wife hopes we can move to another location nearer her parents by this year or next.
[Hunting for a place, negotiating, the price, down payments, purchase, logistics, paperwork, etc. What fun!]

I’m still trying to add some chapters to my memoir draft before getting an editor to take a look.
[The going’s glacier-slow at the moment as I keep getting sidetracked!]

And these are just the foreseeable changes and challenges!

On the upside, each of these is its own blog post, given the logistics, schedules, and upheavals each event generates. So that’s great for my content creation over the next few months cos in theory, I’ll have less to ideate.

On the downside, and when I look at them all in totality? Let’s just say I’ll like to return to said blanket!

While I know these are inevitable seasons of my life, I sometimes wish I could get away from it all, or freeze time.

As I turn 54 in less than two weeks from now, I can’t help but wonder if age increases inertia, which could explain my current apprehension. Especially when you consider how these changes are par for the course for most folks. So why am I making a fuss here?

Well, maybe the answer to this question will be fodder for another day’s blog post too.

Meanwhile, the mid-year school holidays will end tomorrow and the inevitable drone and routine of the school semester will resume on Monday. In short, I’ll be exchanging one busy period (keeping my kids occupied during the holidays) for another (teaching and monitoring their homework).

I think I will take these final 24 hours before the transition to stay firmly under the blanket.

It’ll be good practice for all the above-mentioned changes and challenges coming at me!

Wish me well okay?
