My Monday Metrical Musings #299

Be Myself

The greatest accomplishment
Emerson once said
Is to be yourself in a world
That’s constantly making you
Something else

I know that state all too well
Lived it since young and
Even now. At times
I feel I’m made to align
With whatever others want

Of course I’m obligated
To the fullest extent
With my immediate loved ones
Being there for them
Always, that I may be humbled and available

But with everyone else
Why should I anymore
Move to the beat of their incessant drum?
Surely at this point in my life
I can do without them just fine!

So here’s to quickly shutting them out
That I may focus on what I’m all about
To unleash upon a world still carrying on
As though they own me when they don’t

The quote that inspired today’s poem:
โ€œTo be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishmentโ€ย
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)
