My Monday Metrical Musings #183

buildings and body of water during golden hour

Be Still My S(e)oul!

What’s that you said?
Really? That’s great!!
He can be off to Seoul
WAY TO GO!!!

Oh wait!
It’s too late
He’s not ready
Not yet

My bad
My fault
I didn’t know this year he could
Have a chance to travel with his school group

No one told us
No one prepared us
How can this be?
My son unfortunately is not (yet) free

To travel without daddy
Or his bro and mummy
To fly off solo
To the vibrant city of Seoul

If only we knew
At least three years ago
We would have worked a lot harder
To fast-track and train him to grow

Now this golden opportunity
We’d have to let go I fear
He could have been the first of us
To travel to South Korea

Be still My S(e)oul
Don’t fall to pieces
I couldn’t have known
There were no traces

No warnings or signs
His special school could afford
No hint they were prepared
To chaperone so many abroad

So many with challenges and disabilities
To a strange new land without their families
Only teachers and friends to accompany
No wonder my son is looking so wary

As I told him what I thought
Was wonderful news
That his school wants to take
His class and him to

A field trip to one of Asia’s
Most exciting stops
Lots of fun, food, and not forgetting
Sight-seeing toy shops

But no our friend
Will have none of it
Who can blame him
Since we weren’t ready for it

Should we have been
We most certainly oughta
But no point crying over
Milk spilt all over

That day I must believe
Will come eventually
When he can be independent
A globetrotting traveler set free

Meantime, we’ll take this
As a reminder and a sign
Our job as parents is to ultimately sever
Ourselves from our boy’s umbilical bind
